Eva Lai Yin-shan was born on 20 May 1964 in Hong Kong and grew up in Wah Chui House, Wah Fu Estate on Hong Kong Island. Her father worked as a renovation and painting worker, and her mother was a fishmonger at Sheung Wan Market. In 1982, she enrolled in the 5th Shaw Brothers actors training course and subsequently joined Shaw Brothers Pictures as an artist. In 1985, she won the inaugural Miss Asia Pageant, which led to her joining Asia Television (ATV) and becoming one of its leading actresses. She starred in notable productions including the drama "Xi Shi" and "Genghis Khan" alongside her future husband, Lau Wing. In 1988, she returned to the film industry after her ATV contract ended but gradually withdrew after marrying Lau Wing in 1992. The couple divorced in 2004, after which she entered the insurance business to support her family. She formally returned to ATV in 2007 but left in 2013 due to disputes with the new management. In 2017, at age 53, she joined TVB to continue her acting career.
