Sibelle Hu was born on May 4, 1958, in a military dependents' village in Taiwan, to a family originally from Huai'an County in Jiangsu Province. She graduated from Taipei First Girls' High School and later from the evening history department of National Taiwan University in 1981. She began her career in the late 1970s as a Taiwanese romance film actress, gaining fame through her breakthrough film "歡顏". She was known alongside fellow actresses Hu Guan-zhen and Hu Yin-meng as the "Three Hus" of Taiwan cinema. In the 1980s, she transitioned to Hong Kong action films, where director Hung Kam-po trained her in martial arts and taught her Cantonese. She suffered severe burns in 1989 during the filming of "獵魔群英" due to an explosion accident, but her strong will enabled her to return to acting. She became a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Political Consultative Conference in 2003 and continues to serve. She is the great-aunt of famous actress Sun Li, and in 1998 married ophthalmologist and former Hong Kong Secretary for Home Affairs He Zhi-ping.
