简介

Candy Hau Woon Ling was born on 30 November 1922 in Hong Kong and grew up in a well-off family on Stanley Street in Central, attending a Chinese school. During World War II, she fled with her family to mainland China. Before entering the entertainment industry, she worked as a factory worker, restaurant waitress, housekeeper, and maid, then retired after gallstone surgery left her unable to perform physical labour. In 1989 at age 67, a talent scout noticed her lively personality while she was listening to Cantonese opera at a senior centre, leading to her debut as an extra. She later became a freelance actress through an extras agency, with her first film being Eric Tsang's "小小小警察" (1989) and her first speaking role in John Woo's "喋血雙雄" (1989). She became known as "Stephen Chow's favourite granny" after appearing in multiple Stephen Chow films starting from "審死官" (1992). She also appeared in films such as "嚦咕嚦咕新年財" (2002), "我左眼見到鬼" (2002), "神經俠侶" (2005), and "六樓后座" (2003). Her final film was "李碧華鬼魅系列之迷離夜" (2013), and she briefly returned in 2016 to shoot a PlayStation VR advertisement. She passed away on 19 February 2018 at Wong Tai Sin Hospital under the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.
