Chan Chor-wui, originally Chan Yuk-chun, was born on August 5, 1943, in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation, with ancestral roots in Puning, Guangdong, and was of Chaozhou descent. She demonstrated theatrical talent from a young age and first performed on stage in 1956 at just 13 years old, beginning her stage career. In 1958, she joined the Hong Kong Sun Tin Choi Teochew Opera Troupe, studying under renowned masters such as Cheung Mu-kun and Chau Man-wai, diligently learning the art of male lead roles in Teochew opera. From the 1960s, she began starring in Teochew-language films, appearing in approximately 50 films, with representative works including "Sao Chuang Hui" (Meeting at the Window), "Hou Mu Xin" (Stepmother's Heart), "Chao Zhou Nu Zhuang Yuan" (Chaozhou Female Top Scholar), "Yan Lan Zhen Qiao Po Yu Hua Ping" (Yan Lan Zhen Breaks the Jade Vase), "Bi Yu Zan" (Green Jade Hairpin), "Lu Meng Zheng," "Hong Zong Lie Ma" (Red Mane Fierce Horse), and "Meng Li Jun," becoming a significant actress in Teochew opera films. From 1966, she toured Thailand with the Sun Tin Choi Teochew Opera Troupe, and in 1967 continued to Singapore, where the troupe's prized work "Yi Men San Jin Shi" (Three Scholars from One Family) was widely acclaimed and consistently sold out, becoming a classic. In March 1990, she led the "Hong Kong-Thailand Teochew Opera Troupe" in Singapore, performing works such as "Hong Mei Gu Qing Chou" (Love and Hatred in the Red Plum Valley), "Feng Huo Gu Chu" (Orphan in the Flames of War), "Feng Ge En Chou" (Love and Hate in the Phoenix Pavilion), "Chen Qi Mu Sao" (Morning Wife, Evening Sister-in-Law), "Liu Zhang Xia Shan" (Liu Zhang Descends the Mountain), "Jie Jian" (Borrowing the Sword), "Feng Jia Jin San Kan Yu Mei" (Feng Jia Jin Sees the Imperial Sister Three Times), "Xue Jian Yun Tai" (Blood Splashes the Cloud Terrace), and "Tian Shan Jin Feng" (Golden Phoenix of Tianshan). In August 1990, she established the "Hong Kong Chor-wui Teochew Opera Troupe," frequently performing in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and North America, warmly received by overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. She was celebrated for her clear, mellow voice and elegant, graceful stage presence, earning the title "King of Teochew Opera Male Leads." She not only mastered male lead performance techniques but also studied Northern school martial arts, delivering layered and emotionally compelling performances. She also worked as a dubbing artist for theatrical films, primarily dubbing Cantonese opera films featuring performers such as Yam Kim-fai, Law Kim-long, and Lam Ka-sing into Teochew opera films for distribution in Southeast Asia. Her partnership with renowned female lead actress Fong Haau-yuk was regarded as a classic in Teochew opera history, with their collaboration in "Sao Chuang Hui" being particularly praised by fans. On October 23, 2012, Chan Chor-wui passed away in Hong Kong due to liver cancer at the age of 69, with her funeral held on November 9.
