简介

Kwan Ying Lin, originally named Chow Lin, was a native of Guangdong Province, China. Her mother died when she was four, and her father remarried, after which she was taken by her stepmother and stepfather into the Cantonese opera world, where she began working at a young age. In 1921, as all-female opera troupes rose to prominence, Kwan emerged as one of the leading Cantonese opera actresses, specializing in "romantic and seductive" roles with her graceful and captivating style. One of her most famous works was "Dan Jia Mei Mai Ma Ti," which was renamed after her due to its great success. She also served as a supporting actress for the famous performer Xue Juexian and was known as the "Fresh Lotus Queen" for her portrayal of Pan Jinlian. Her career extended to cinema in the 1930s, with film appearances including "Ke Tu Qiu Hen" and "Shen Mi Zhi Ye," Hong Kong's first musical film. Her eldest daughter, Ou Chu Qiao, became a Cantonese opera star, and the famous actress Xu Shu Fang was her disciple. Kwan Ying Lin passed away in November 1979 in the United States after battling bone cancer, at the age of over seventy.
