Wu Lai Chu was the first female martial arts actress in Chinese cinema history, nicknamed "Female Tarzan." She was born in 1907 in Dinghai County, Ningbo Prefecture, Zhejiang Province. She had a deep foundation in martial arts and trained continuously, with exceptionally agile and outstanding movements. She was active in Shanghai and Hong Kong films from the 1930s to the 1950s. Her final film was "雌虎鬧京華" (1963). During her time in Hong Kong, she appeared in about twenty Mandarin and Cantonese films. She was married to the famous director Ren Pengnian. Her daughter was the famous director Ren Yizhi. After retiring, she emigrated to Thailand, where she passed away on June 23, 1978, at the age of 71. Her funeral took place in Bangkok on June 28, 1978.
