简介

Lu Yunfei, nicknamed "Luk Ling-liu", was born in 1919 in Xinhui County, Guangdong Province, and passed away in 1968. He was a celebrated Cantonese opera performer, renowned as the "King of Chousheng" (clown roles), as well as a film actor. He began his artistic journey at age nine when he joined an opera troupe, and at sixteen became a disciple of dan actress Xiao Lizhang. He rose to fame performing chousheng comedic roles. In 1939, he traveled to the United States to perform Cantonese opera, appeared in about ten films, and also ran an automobile repair business. He brought back a "rotating universe lamp" that caused a sensation when used on stage. From 1949 to 1959, he served as the chousheng in the prestigious Yongguangming Cantonese Opera Troupe, where he was one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" alongside Lü Yulang, Chiu Shiuyun, and Siu Feihong, collaborating continuously for over a decade. He was known for his distinctive comedic style rich in everyday life flavor, emphasizing skill within simplicity and movement within stillness. He creatively imitated guitar slides in his singing. In 1965, he impressed theatre critics with his performances in "Three Treasures" and "The Blind Man Asks for Rice." He also showed remarkable versatility in cross-gender roles, such as playing a maidservant in "Liu Jinding Cuts Four Gates." He passed away in 1968, and his former residence in Guangzhou remains as a testament to his artistic legacy.
