VaVa, born Mao Yanqi on October 29, 1995, is a Chinese hip-hop singer from Ya'an City, Sichuan Province. She grew up in an artistic environment, as her mother Mao Yan was a Latin dance teacher who ran a dance training school in Ya'an. VaVa officially entered the entertainment industry in 2014 by releasing a duet song with Wang Yilong titled 《就這個調調》, followed by her first solo single 《你很Low》 in the same year. She continued her career by releasing the original single 《我就是愛》 and her first personal EP album 《我想對你說baby》 in 2015. In 2016, she participated in the Listen up National Rap Song Creation Competition, winning the championship and the Most Promising Award in the finals, and also appeared on Zhejiang TV's 《夢想的聲音》. VaVa gained widespread fame in 2017 after competing on iQiyi's hip-hop music talent show 《中國有嘻哈》, reaching the national semifinals as a top-four finalist. That same year, she released her solo rap single 《誰比我有范兒》 and launched her first national tour, VaVa《萬有音樂系21》 Tour 2017, which lasted 43 days across 10 Chinese cities. In 2018, her song 《我的新衣》 gained international exposure after being used as an insert song in the Hollywood film Crazy Rich Asians, and was later featured in the video game Just Dance 2020. In 2021, she participated as a "Flight Partner" in the second season of Zhejiang TV's music competition show 《天赐的声音》.
