Huang Junying

Biography

Huang Junying is a Chinese performing arts artist and comedian born on October 6, 1936, in the Xiguan district of Guangzhou, China, with ancestral roots in Shangchi Village, Sulong Town, Guangdong Province. He began his artistic career at the age of sixteen when he studied under the renowned Cantonese opera artist Luo Pinchao and spent six years learning the art of Cantonese opera. In 1958, Huang Junying traveled to Beijing to participate in the first National Quyi Arts Festival of China, where he was introduced to the northern "xiangsheng" (cross-talk) art form. Deeply captivated by it, he dedicated himself to adapting northern xiangsheng for southern audiences. In May 1983, he co-founded the "Guangzhou Xiangsheng Art Troupe" alongside Yang Da, Lin Yunhong, and Cui Lingxiao, serving as its director. Huang married actress Cui Lingxiao in 1964, who was a member of the Guangdong Folk Music Orchestra.
