简介

Hong Miao was born in 1904 in Thailand to a family from the Chaoshan region of China, and at the age of four returned with his father to the family hometown in Longdu, Cheng Hai. He began his artistic journey by joining a Chaozhou big drum troupe, then embarked on a long career in Chaozhou opera, where he became famous for performing elderly female roles (lao dan) as a male actor, earning him the title of a living legend of the role. He created a unique singing style known as the "Hong style," marked by a powerful, emotionally rich voice that masterfully conveyed the feelings of elderly women, with precise rhythm and harmony with musical instruments. His stage acting was remarkably detailed and realistic, skillfully imitating the aged body through trembling movements and slow steps, and using subtle gestures like shoulder shrugs and hand rubbing to express character traits. Hong Miao reshaped the role of Yang Lingpo (She Tai Jun) in his famous play "Yang Lingpo Argues the Case" as a symbol of female heroism and dignity, and also brilliantly portrayed the blind and wronged Empress Li in "Bao Gong Meets Empress Li." Due to his artistic stature, his works were counted among the "Three Gems" of Chaozhou opera heritage, and he earned the nickname "the Living She Tai Jun" for his vivid and moving portrayal of the aged matriarch.
