In 1955, he became deputy head and later head of Troupe No. 2 of the China Peking Opera Theatre upon its establishment. On December 16, 1961, he became a disciple of master Zhou Xinfang alongside Li Shaochun and others, thus combining the Gao school vocal tradition with the Qi (Yi) school artistic characteristics. He performed in Australia, New Zealand, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Soviet Union, Hong Kong, and Macau. Among his notable students are Xin Baoda and Nimaocai.
