Her career began early when she played the role of "Little Hai Xia" in the film of the same name during her primary school years, which brought her fame. In the 1990s, Cai Ming shifted her career path and began performing comedic roles, appearing frequently in skit performances during the CCTV Chinese New Year Gala. In 2000, the TV series "Idle Ma Dajie" further increased her widespread popularity, and the character "Ma Dajie" became one of her iconic roles. Cai Ming holds the record for the most appearances by a female actress at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, having participated 28 times between 1991 and 2019, including 27 skit performances and one cross-gender role, earning her the nickname "Queen of Transformation." In her personal life, she married Ding Qiuxing in August 1985 and they had a son named Ding Ding, who became a screenwriter and co-wrote the film "Lost in Thailand." Cai Ming suffered painful family losses in late 2015 and early 2016 that nearly caused her to withdraw from the 2016 Spring Festival Gala.
