简介
Ng Kwan Lai (original name Wu Yanyun) was a Cantonese opera and Hong Kong film actress, born on 29 January 1930 in Xiaolan, Zhongshan, Guangdong province. She spent her childhood in Shanghai, attending Zhongxin School, and moved with her mother to Hong Kong after the Second Sino-Japanese War. She studied Cantonese opera from Yum Zi Chung and later joined the Xiangjiang Cantonese Opera Academy founded by Chan Fei Nong, becoming his close disciple and earning the title "Jade-Throated Beautiful Leading Lady." She excelled in both Qingyi (virtuous female) and Daomadan (martial female) roles and participated in approximately 120 films, including opera films and modern dramas. She was one of the "Eight Peonies" (八牡丹), a sworn sisterhood of eight Cantonese opera actresses, known as the "White Peony" (白牡丹). In 1962, she founded the Xin Leisheng Film Company to directly participate in film production. During the 1970s and 1980s, she performed with the Song Xinsheng Troupe led by Lam Kar Sing, and from 1987 to 1993 she co-organized the Xin Leisheng Cantonese Opera Troupe with Chan Kim Sing and Sun Hoi Chuen. In 1991, she held her solo concert "Ng Kwan Lai Si Cheng Hui Zhi Yin" in Singapore, after which she rarely performed. In 2004, she donated 3,000 items of costumes, opera props, scripts, promotional materials, and photographs to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. In 2008, she signed with TVB to film the sitcom "Off Pedder," leaving in 2009 after her one-year contract ended. She passed away on 26 September 2018 at the age of 88 from lung cancer complicated by pulmonary fluid accumulation. At the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2019, she was honoured posthumously alongside other late filmmakers.
