简介

Hua Wenyi was a Chinese Kunqu opera performance artist and a graduate of the first class of the Shanghai Opera School. She studied under renowned masters such as Zhu Chuanming, Yu Zhenfei, and Yan Huizhu, specializing in the "guimendan" (young maiden) role. Yu Zhenfei called her a "naturally born guimendan who appears once in several centuries," and audiences praised her as "the little Mei Lanfang." In 1989, she traveled to the United States with the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, but after disputes with the troupe, she decided to stay and settle permanently in the U.S., which sparked considerable controversy. Nevertheless, she continued her Kunqu career in America, founding the "Hua Kun Research Society" in Los Angeles, receiving support from the U.S. government for annual performances. She also served as a visiting professor at Yale University, Princeton University, and other institutions to introduce Kunqu opera. In 1992, she was invited by Taiwan's National Theater and Concert Hall to perform four shows of The Peony Pavilion. She returned to the mainland stage in 1996, receiving an honorary award from the Ministry of Culture, and was met by senior leaders such as Zhu Rongji and Chen Zhili. In 1997, she was awarded the highest traditional arts award by the U.S. government. In February 2001, she returned to Shanghai to participate in the filming of the Kunqu opera film Fan Li and Xi Shi. In 2007, through coordination by the Shanghai Municipal Communist Party Committee, Hua Wenyi returned to the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, starring in performances honoring her mentor Yan Huizhu and serving as a teacher for the guimendan class at the Shanghai Opera School. She passed away on April 13, 2022, in Los Angeles at the age of 81.
