简介

Bai Yang (1920–1996), originally named Yang Chengfang, was a prominent Chinese film actress born in Beijing to a wealthy family from Hunan province. She entered the world of acting in 1931 at the Lianhua Film Company's training school and began her professional career in 1934 with the Chinese Travel Theater. She achieved her breakthrough in 1936 with the film "Crossroads" alongside actor Zhao Dan, becoming one of the most celebrated Chinese actresses of her era, with the British Times calling her "China's Greta Garbo." During the War of Resistance, she appeared in films such as "Daughter of the Nation," "Vast Sky," and "Youth of China," and performed notable plays in Chongqing. In 1946, she starred in "Eight Thousand Li of Clouds and Moon" and "The Spring River Flows East," where she portrayed a uniquely Eastern feminine character that made the film a Chinese artistic masterpiece. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, she served as an actress and director at Shanghai Film Studio and as vice chairman of the China Film Association. In 1962, she was selected as one of the 22 Great Film Stars of New China. She won a special award at the 10th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for her role in "Blessing." During the Cultural Revolution, she endured severe persecution and imprisonment for years, but was rehabilitated in 1977. She authored several books on film acting technique, including "Random Notes on Film Acting Techniques" and "Exploration of Film Acting." Known for her natural beauty and Eastern femininity on screen and stage, she is regarded as one of the greatest actresses in Chinese cinema history.
